Nail fungal infections or "onychomycosis" are infections of the fingernails or toenails leading to discoloration, thickening and breaking of nails. Usually, this infection is painless. Nail fungal infection may lead to fungal skin infection on the foot, commonly known as “athlete’s foot”. Nail fungal infection is present in 2 to 13% of the population and may reach 48% by the age of 70 years. Treatment of nail fungal infection is expensive and requires long-term therapy with an oral antifungal medication with potential side effects. Thus, there is need for very selective and superior diagnosis tool. The most common laboratory tests for diagnosis are microscopy and culture. These methods lack the sensitivity and specificity required for accurate diagnosis. Our PCR test has a 99.9% sensitivity and specificity for all pathogens on our panel. Also, our PCR test can detect co-infections and results are typically available within 24 hours.
